Atmospheric plasma preparation of Aluminium alloy for thermoplastic fibre-metal laminates
The Henniker Cirrus atmospheric plasma system was used to prepare aluminium alloy sheets used in hybrid thermoplastic fibre-metal laminates and the bond strength and interlaminar shear strength were evaluated with reference to the resulting changes in surface morphology and surface energy.
Highlights
- Resin-infused thermoplastic fibre-metal laminates (TP-FML) have been manufactured.
- Surface treatments on the aluminium alloy enhanced the bond strength between metal and composite.
- TP-FML has been mechanically assessed and compared to an equivalent thermoplastic composite.
- Improvements on interfacial bond strength have been investigated by mode-I fracture toughness testing.
