The Bridge: A Hub of Innovation
The Bridge (Advanced Materials and Engineering R&D Centre) at the University of Lincoln is a centre for innovation in advanced materials that works with local and national businesses to provide education, cutting edge engineering and collaboration. The Bridge works alongside the University of Lincoln to create a network of advanced science and engineering professionals that can work on solving problems through innovation.
Located in a purpose-built innovation facility and alongside the Science and Innovation Park at the University of Lincoln, the Bridge includes purpose-built conference, meeting, and networking rooms as well as multiple laboratories, a training suite and an innovation lounge.
Since it was opened in October 2022, The Bridge has already collaborated with industry on over 100 projects.
Advanced Instrumentation at The Bridge
The Bridge offers skills and methods in advanced materials analysis, including, amongst others;
- Morphology, topology and elemental composition and distribution using advanced electron microscopy.
- Surface speciation and performance with advanced atomic force microscopy and tribology testing methods.
The electron microscopy laboratory at The Bridge focuses on nanoscale material analysis, offering industry access to electron microscopes capable of revealing the morphology, composition, crystallography, and defects of various materials, including metals, ceramics, polymers, and biomaterials.
It features the Thermo Fisher Talos F200i (S)TEM, combined scanning transmission electron microscope (S/TEM) and a focussed ion beam scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM).
Recognising the need for a robust and reliable sample preparation technique, The Bridge approached Henniker Plasma. The HPT-100 TEM plasma cleaner, which features a re-entrant style sample introduction adapter, precise control at low powers for delicate samples such as holey carbon grids, and a simple touch-screen user interface with multiple recipe store, was chosen.
Users can tailor the cleaning process with remarkable precision, ensuring the acquisition of high-quality imaging and precise results. Henniker's solution offers outstanding performance at a fraction of the cost compared to other systems available on the market, making it a preferred choice for laboratories of all sizes.
The combination of state-of-the-art microscopy facilities and advanced sample preparation techniques will allow industry partners to access the most reliable and accurate surface analysis techniques currently available, ultimately leading to accelerated technological advancements for its users.
